Herts Health Ride – 11th July 2021

Herts Health Ride – in partnership with the East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity

JOIN US FOR THIS TIMED CYCLE SPORTIF TO SUPPORT THE VALUABLE  CHARITY WORK  OF THE EAST & NORTH HERTFORDSHIRE HOSPITALS’ CHARITY

Based at the magnificent surroundings of the Woodhall Estate this bike ride will take in the rolling countryside of North and East Hertfordshire. We will have three well-signed routes available on public roads from a beginner-friendly 28km loop with less than 1% of climbing, a 56km undulating loop and a challenging 109km loop that has over 1000m of climb in the Northern Chilterns.

For those using GPS devices, GPX files will be provided to download before the event.

There will be three refreshment points on the 100km route (2 on the 55km, and 1 on the 28km) to enable you to replenish your water bottles and energy reserves.

We will have a sweep vehicle on the course to assist any cyclists who have mechanical issues, and in case of any serious issues, we will have emergency contact numbers available for you to call, with paramedics on standby.
The route will cover a variety of road surfaces, and we encourage you to carry suitable spares in case of punctures and minor mechanicals.

In addition to the road rides mentioned above, we will have an untimed 3.2km family-friendly ride that doesn’t leave the Woodhall Estate. This lap will be on manicured grass, suitable for all types of bikes and suitable for all ages and abilities to have a go at. We challenge you to see how many laps of the route you can complete. Each rider will have a card that will be stamped each lap to prove just how far they have travelled.

Upon completion of your ride, you’ll all receive a finishers medal celebrating your achievement, and we will have food and drink available to purchase at the event HQ.

Sign up today to support the East and North Hertfordshire Hospital’s Charity while enjoying a beautiful ride in the Hertfordshire countryside.

The routes are available to peruse and download (https://www.plotaroute.com/routecollection/5411?units=km )

The Challenge Cycle is a 28km anti-clockwise loop that heads North to Watton at Stone, before heading West through Datchworth and Woolmer Green then down through the edge of Welwyn Old Town to the refreshment stop at Sherrardswood School after 11km. You may need a bit of energy as soon after you’ll hit the only major climb on the course, the 1.3km climb up from Digswell. Its not super steep, but its tough enough for local cycling clubs to use it for their hill climb championships! The good news is that this is the highest point on the course and you can enjoy a downhill run back towards Woodhall Estate and the Event HQ.

The Big Ride is a 56km loop that starts out the same as the shorter Challenge loop, but turns Northwards after just over 10km where it splits from the Challenge route.  At the next roundabout you’ll take the turning on to the beautiful lanes that typify this area. Winding around the lanes that circumnavigate Codicote, you’ll end up in Whitwell where a left turn reveals the first of two short steep climbs before descending in to Kimpton and the second short steep climb.  The first refreshment stop will be at the Cross Keys in Gustard Wood at 24km. After the stop, you’ll enjoy a 10km descent down towards Wheathampstead and Stanborough before climbing over Ayot Green to rejoin the Challenge loop at 39km at the Sherrardswood School refreshment stop.

The 109km Enduro Sportif starts the same as the Big Ride before splitting at Whitwell and heading North over the climb of StPauls Walden. The route then skirts around Hitchin before heading up towards Shefford where you turn Southwards to the first refreshment point at the White Hart in Campton at 48km. We recommend taking some energy on board as there is still plenty of climbing to come in the second half with 5 notable climbs, interspersed with steady long descents. At 72km you’ll rejoin the Big Ride course and soon after, the refreshment point at the Cross Keys comes at 78km. If anyone needs it, there is a third and final refreshment point at Sherrardswood School at 91km.

The Family Ride This is an untimed 3.2km family-friendly ride that doesn’t leave the Woodhall Estate. This lap will be on manicured grass, suitable for all types of bikes and suitable for all ages and abilities to have a go at. We challenge you to see how many laps of the route you can complete. Each rider will have a card that will be stamped each lap to prove just how far they have travelled.
