You can turn up for all or part of the session.
Merchant Taylors’ School Open Water Swimming Address:
Sandy Lodge Road
There are multiple swimming loops in the stunning fresh water lake, measuring 100m, 300m, 400m, 750m and 1,000m.
We will have a full water safety crew in kayaks and on paddleboards to support you in the water and an ATW staff member will be at the water edge to make sure everyone feels welcome, knows the swim rules and enters and exits the water safely.
Wet suits are not compulsory but a brightly coloured swim hat or tow float is. We do have swim hats for sale at lakeside if you forget yours.
ActiveTrainingWorld want everyone to enjoy these open water swimming sessions safely and therefore we require everyone to adhere to our strict social distancing rules when attending the sessions. Anyone found to be flaunting the rules will be instantly banned from all future ATW open water swimming sessions.
Experienced Individual Sessions, Age Restrictions and Coaching Sessions
We expect everyone attending these sessions to be a competent and confident swimmer but these sessions are not just for elite swimmers. We welcome swimmers of all standards and ages to enjoy our beautiful lake.
The sessions are now open to under 16’s who must also be confident swimmers. Under 16’s will only be allowed to complete the 400m lap unless specific permission has been given by the lakeside staff. Under 12’s must be accompanied at all times in the water by an adult from the same household. All swimmers between 12-16 yrs will be asked to do a monitored 100m loop on their first session. Once accredited in this way they will be allowed to swim the 400m lap on their own.
If you would like to be involved but are not a confident open-water swimmer then this is an excellent opportunity to book one of our coaching sessions with Aloha Tri! Please go to the booking site here
All sessions are pre-book only here to ensure that we can maintain a safe ‘swimmer to safety team’ ratio.
For now we are not offering season passes as we need to make sure that there is never more than 60 people in any one session.
The calendar to make your booking(s) is below. Find the date you would like to swim and then register your details. You can select a maximum of 10 sessions per booking and you can either use your details for every booking or you can enter the details of other swimmers. Please take the time to review your bookings before proceeding to payment.

Arriving and Changing
Free parking is available at the school. There is no access to the showers or changing rooms. Swimmers are required to arrive ready to swim. You can of course put your wetsuit on by your car.
It would be a good idea to practice putting on your wetsuit by yourself as people will not be able to assist you with fastening the rear zip on a wetsuit.
After your swim you will be able to use the designated ATW gazebos to change in. These will have a ‘1 out, 1 in’ policy and inside there will be no tables, chairs or other surfaces. No baggage is allowed to be kept in this area.
The toilets will now be in the Old Merchant Taylors clubhouse building next to the car park.
A simple drop off and pick up baggage area will be available at the edge of the lake. This area is not to be treated like a transition or changing area. You can only quickly drop off a bag here and then collect the bag after the swim. This area will be contained but ATW accept no responsibility for your possessions. It would be preferable if you left all valuables at home or in your vehicle.
Entering the lake
A 2m queuing system will be operational to enter the lake. Before entering the lake you need to give your name to the ATW staff member who will have a list of all pre-paid swimmers. Remember there is no pay on the day and you will be turned away if you haven’t pre booked.
When in the water we require everyone to swim individually in their own space or with someone that you share a house with. Please respect the swimmers around you and find your own space. If you get into trouble in the water then lie on your back with one arm in the air and our water safety team will be on hand to help.
If you are not a competent swimmer then please do not attend these sessions, the lake is not the place to learn to swim.
Exiting the lake
When you exit the lake you will be able to pick up your bag from the baggage area. From there we expect you to get changed in the designated area or make your way back to your vehicle to get changed and leave quickly. Once COVID restrictions are relaxed we will be encouraging our swimmers to enjoy the lakeside atmosphere, but for now we must follow the rules.
Wetsuit hire and shop purchases
All of these will not be available whilst the strict social distancing rules are in place. Later in the year we may be able to introduce this but for now we expect all swimmers to arrive ready to swim and have everything they need with them.
Book your session
If you are happy to follow our social distancing rules and want to swim in the beautiful fresh water lake then we very much look forward to seeing you at the lake soon!
